Is it safe to share contact lenses with others?

No. Don't share your contact lenses with anyone! Contact lenses, even if worn for cosmetic reasons are medical devices and should only be worn under the supervision of a licensed eye care professional. Sharing contact lenses may spread microorganisms which may result in serious eye health problems.

Which type of contact lens is best for me?

The contact lens that is best for you may depend on your lifestyle and vision correction. There are many varieties of soft contact lenses; your eye care professional will help you determine which lenses are right for you.

What is the best contact lens care system?

Are my solutions good for an indefinite period of time?

Contact lens solutions should not be used after the expirations date. The discard date is the date the solution should be thrown out after opening. Manufacturers have begun to assign discard dates to their solutions.

How often should I replace my lens case?

The American Optometric Association recommends you replace your contact lens storage case at least every three months.

Is it safe to shower in contact lenses?

It is recommended not to shower while wearing contact lenses. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended that contact lenses not be exposed to any form of water. Although rare, a sight-threatening eye complication, "Acanthamoeba keratitis", is caused by an organism present in all forms of impure water (i.e., swimming pools, tap water, saunas, wells, and showers). It would be preferable to insert your contact lenses after showering. If lenses are being worn while showering, it is recommended to keep the eyes firmly closed.

Are contacts lenses hard to take care of?

It differs from lens to lens:

  • Daily disposable soft lenses are worn once, then discarded, with no maintenance required.

 

  • Other disposable soft lenses are usually cleaned at the end of the day, then soaked in disinfecting solution until they're worn again, and may be replaced weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

 

  • Soft lenses that are replaced quarterly or annually might require weekly enzyming in additional to daily care.

Can I wear soft contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

Yes, you can wear a special type of soft contact lens called a toric lens which will correct your astigmatism. However, these lenses are typically more expensive and there are fewer types available than there are with regular (spherical) lenses.
